Cleaning your catalytic combustor
is easy with the right tools! You will need 7/16 and ½ wrenches
and a 5/32 Allen wrench. Gloves and eye protection are
recommended.
Access the combustor by removing
the 4 Allen bolts in the top or rear flue cover plate
using the Allen wrench. Always be sure the stove is cool
before starting!
Once the plate is off, use a 7/16 wrench
or nut driver to remove the bolt holding up the combustor
shield.
Remove the shield carefully as the
edges may be sharp. Wear gloves if you have them.
If they were not removed during installation,
you may need to remove the shipping bolts with the ½ inch
wrench. They would be located at the two ends of the
combustor box.
Lift the front edge of the combustor
box and rotate it 90 degrees to bring it out of the stove.
After about 6 weeks of burning, or
after each cord of wood, your combustor may have some
fly-ash accumulation.
Use a household vacuum, a shop vac,
or a soft bristled clean paintbrush to gently clean both
the top and bottom of the combustor. Hold the combustor
up to the light to be sure the cells are clean.
While the combustor box is out of
the stove, vacuum or brush the area below where the combustor
sits. Clean off the cast iron plate and the metal screen.
Put the combustor box back in and
rotate it 90 Degrees to sit back on its gasketed opening.
Be sure the side of the combustor box with the bolt hole
for the shield is facing toward you.
You do not need to re-install the
shipping bolts. Re-install shield and tighten the 7/16 bolt.
Replace the flue cover plate and
tighten the 4 Allen bolts with the 5/32 Allen wrench.
Cleaning your combustor every 6 weeks,
or after every cord of wood, will keep your stove running
at peak efficiency and extend the life of your catalytic
combustor.
